Overview of Clinical Supervision

ABOUT THE COURSE:

This course is for current and aspiring supervisors in developing and strengthening their supervisory skills.  The course will provide 3 Clinical C.E. by providing an in depth overview of the Integrated Developmental Model of supervision and review the law and ethics pertaining specifically to clinical supervision. First, an introduction to supervision will be provided including the definition of clinical supervision, the different roles of a supervisor, and California Board of Behavioral Sciences regulations regarding clinical supervision.  Then, an overview of the Integrated Developmental Model of clinical supervision will be provided. This clinical supervision model provides a roadmap for supervisors that enhances their understanding of their supervisee’s stage of development and assists the supervisor to develop realistic expectations, build compassion and understanding, and allow them to offer interventions that align with their supervisee’s developmental needs and abilities. Lastly, the course will provide 3 ethic C.E. by reviewing the legal and ethical aspects and guidelines for supervision will be given along with suggestions how supervisors can minimize their risk of legal liability.

INSTRUCTOR:

Sharon Greene is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Sharon has been adjunct faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California and California State University Northridge in the Graduate Social Work Departments since 2008 teaching advanced clinical practice graduate courses. She is currently the training director at Providence Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center which is a nonprofit that provides mental health services to children and their families. She has trained clinical supervisors in her position as training director since 2007 in utilizing the Integrated Developmental Model of Clinical Supervision in order to provide quality supervision. She has also provided clinical supervision since 2003 to unlicensed clinicians collecting their hours toward licensure. 

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE:

This workshop is designed for mental health clinicians with two or more years of post- licensure experience who are interested in developing or enhancing their clinical supervision skills. This course is targeted to beginning and intermediate clinical supervisors.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

As a result of participating in this training, participants will be able to:

1. Define what is the Integrated Developmental Model of Clinical Supervision

2. Define the four different levels of supervisees according to the integrated developmental model

3. Articulate how a supervisor tailors their supervision to each level of supervisee

4. Articulate the 8 different domains a supervisor needs to assess in order to understand their supervisee’s developmental level

5. Articulate the legal and ethical requirements of supervisors.

6. Describe the different components that need to be covered in the contracting stage of supervision.

7. Describe the ethical obligations of supervisors to their supervisees and to the profession.

8. Define vicarious liability and identify at least 3 steps a supervisor can take to decrease their risk.

10am-12pm  The Integrated Developmental Model of Supervision (2 hours)

·         Description of Level 1,2,3 and 3i supervisees

·         Clinical Supervision interventions for each level
