Why Do We Keep Having the Same Argument?

Many couples seek couples therapy because they’re frustrated by having what feels like the exact same argument over and over.

The topic may change, but the argument doesn’t.

Money.

Sex and intimacy.

Parenting.

Household responsibilities.

Work stress.

In-laws.

Not spending enough time together.

One partner criticizes. The other becomes defensive. Frustration builds, sometimes turning into contempt. Eventually, someone shuts down.

The Gottmans describe these patterns as the Four Horsemen: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling.

But when couples struggle with communication problems and recurring conflict, focusing only on what was said can miss something important.

Underneath repeated arguments are often deeper emotional needs.

“Why didn’t you call?” may really mean, Do I matter to you?

“Why do I have to do everything?” may mean, I feel alone in this relationship.

“Why don’t you ever want sex?” may contain a deeper fear: Do you still want me?

And “Just leave me alone” may mean, I’m overwhelmed and afraid nothing I say will make this better.

Couples can spend years arguing about the surface issue without ever having the conversation underneath it.

Couples therapy can help slow this cycle down so you can understand what you’re really fighting about, communicate your needs more clearly, and begin responding to each other differently.

You don’t necessarily need fewer disagreements. You need a healthier way to have them.

I provide online couples therapy in California and New York for couples struggling with communication, frequent arguments, emotional disconnection, intimacy concerns, and relationship stress.

If you keep having the same arguments without truly resolving them and want to feel connected again, please reach out for couples therapy.
